HOW TO PLAY OLD GAMES ON WINDOWS 10

Microsoft constantly works hard on improving its OS. Obviously we can enjoy fresh updates frequently. The developer tries to build updates so that they are compatible with older software, though it is not always possible and we can meet trouble using old programs or playing old games. Apparently, there are some modes you can install on the new OS to avoid inconsistency, but still they cannot guarantee perfect compatibility.

The reasons why some old games are not compatible with Windows 10 OS

  • When updating, some old games are based on the information kept inside the old version of the game. This dependency can cause the following: Windows 10 does not any longer take information from old versions of games, it is updating completely and the old information is not interfering. When this happens, new updates cannot be installed to the old games, since there is no basement for them.
  • New 64-bit Windows OS does not support 16-bit requiring programs and games.
  • Very few old games based on DOS are likely to run on modern Windows OS. That is why it is next to impossible to play old PC games on Windows 10.
  • Such a thing as DRM seriously limits the capabilities of old games and they simply do not load.

As you can see there are several strong issues, why playing old games on windows 10 is so difficult. Still we can recommend the following steps to try:

  • Open using Administration mode. The very first thing to try is to run a game as administrator. For this click the icon of the game with the right button of your mouse where you will see this option.

  • There is a built-in software called “Program Compatibility Troubleshooter” in Windows 10. It is developed to solve issues connected with compatibility of applications. In the control panel, find Run programs (you can use a search window on the left of the screen). Put a tick to apply repairs automatically. You will get to mark the program with which you have problems from the list after the scan is finished. If there is no such a program in the list, put it as “Not Listed” and indicate the location of the program.

Then you will have to choose the recommended settings for running. Sometimes the Compatibility Troubleshooter asks for the original CD. After the scan is completed, mark the result depending on what you get.

Program Compatibility Troubleshooter may fail. If this happens, pick up from the list of results after the scan is completed:

1.       The game does not run.

2.       The game runs, but the color or sound is different from what they are supposed to be.

3.       There are windows of denied access or restricted permissions.

4.       The problem you have is not reflected.

Sometimes there can be more than one issues, so do not give up from the beginning, but have another try.

  • If the previous ay did not work out, you can try to change compatibility settings manually. With the right-click on the application enter the properties and choose compatibility to open the game in its previous versions. There are some more settings, such as, for example, a reduced color mode. Try a combination you see fit including different positions.

  •  Another option is to cancel forced drivers signature. Modern drivers are normally signed as 32 or 64-bit. For some reason drivers used in old games are not necessarily signed and signature enforcement is used to protect your system from unwanted drivers. Although this can make your PC more vulnerable, this option can work out. You get to start from opening the advanced boot settings window by pressing Shift button when restarting. Open a troubleshoot part and go to the advanced settings, where you will find the startup menu. Choose “Disable driver signature enforcement”, then “Enter” and you are done.

  • When talking about DOS apps that will not run, DOSBox may well help you. It is a free program that can be installed free and brings a lot of old games back to life.
